Surrogate motherhood, the appeal for dialogue by Maschio (FdI): “No to a violent confrontation. Annoyed by the attacks in Roccella”

ROME – “Against the surrogate uterus the committee procedure begins tomorrow. If there was a fast lane it could be done in a couple of months, but since these are ethically sensitive issues, I don’t gamble on predictions”. Male President, in your institutional capacity launches an appeal?

“Yes, I would like to appeal for dialogue to all those who will measure themselves on a subject as delicate as surrogacy, so that they can confront each other with respect for the ideas of others. These are sensitive issues. Everyone should use balanced words and tones. No to a violent confrontation, yes to a civil one”.

Are you afraid that you will end up with insults?

“I don’t fear it. But the tones light up easily on justice: in the past months they have already been very heated and I could give endless examples. Now that individual sensitivities are touched, we risk raising them even more”.

What bothered you the most: the statements of Rampelli, of Mollicone, who are also your party colleagues?

“I was more annoyed by the attack on Minister Roccella, who mentioned the market for children with surrogates. I fully agree with what he said. Unfortunately, what the minister spoke of is a sad reality. In India, selected women volunteers for the rented uterus they receive three thousand/five thousand dollars in compensation per gestation for a turnover of 2 billion euros. I completely subscribe to the worried words of the minister on this issue”.

As a lawyer, do you believe that introducing the universal crime of surrogacy is possible, aren’t there any findings of illegitimacy?

“In the Varchi-Maschio proposal which, I repeat, belongs to the entire FdI group, it is envisaged that Italian citizens who resort to surrogacy abroad (in Italy it is already a crime with law 40 on assisted fertilization, article 12) , are liable to prosecution. The issue is therefore procreative tourism and the prosecution of Italians who use surrogacy abroad”

In your opinion, is the battle against the surrogate uterus a priority?

“The priority issues are the economic ones, energy, more efficient justice especially the civil one, the Pnrr, the updating and monitoring of the Cartabia reform or even bullying and cyber bullying. But the rented uterus is a heartfelt theme and therefore deserves a space for discussion. In the commission’s agenda, however, the issues on the calendar have always been decided together”.
