Struggle, Chamizo returns after disqualification and wins silver at the European Championship

Silver for Frank Chamizo in the category -74kg to the European wrestling championships taking place in Zagreb. The Italian-Cuban lost against the Slovak-born Russian Tajmuraz Salkazanov in the final. Chamizo returned to a major international event after serving a 3-month disqualification for testing positive for a drug: the plea bargain had made him lose the world bronze medal won in Belgrade in 2022. Chamizo restarted with his head down and has already returned to an important podium, his eighth consecutive in a continental championship (4 golds). In September he will attack the Olympic pass at the World Cup, once again in Belgrade.

The final in Zagreb was the same – and ended in exactly the same way – as the 2022 European Championship in Budapest. The final opened with a study phase, in which Chamizo received a passivity warning. Salkazanov then broke the delay 1’10” from the end of the first period, dragging Chamizo out of the fight area for the 1-0 point. In the second half, the blue was unable to find a gap in the Slovakian’s defense : 1’50” from the end the second point arrived for the Slovak for a new passivity. At that point the Rio 2016 Olympic bronze medalist tried to force himself to recover the disadvantage, however opening himself up too much and allowing his opponent to also bring home the point of 3-0. Chamizo’s final forcing was useless, as he unlocked his scorecard just 6″ from the end but lost the match 1-3.

Weightlifting, the Italian-Cuban Reyes gold in Europe

On the platforms of Yerevan (Armenia) the blue Oscar Reyes, in his first continental participation with the Italian national team, dominated the 81 kg category, winning the gold medal with a total of 343 kg. Behind him the Turkish Han Balu Yuksel (silver with 339 kg) and the landlord Rafik Harutyunyan (bronze with 337 kg). Race without history, with our standard-bearer first in terms of detachment both in the snatch phase (155 kg) and in the momentum phase (188 kg). In the second segment of the race, a single lift was enough for Reyes to secure the primacy, a symptom of a clear superiority over his rivals in the race. Reyes, an athlete in the Army sports group, was born in Cuba in 1996 and acquired Italian citizenship in March 2021.
