Shut down oil-fired plants, minimize coal-fired ones. The Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, signed the deed in which he asks Terna, Arera and the Energy Services Manager to remodulate the production of electricity from coal, fuel oil, sustainable bioliquids and from solid biomasses, stopping the Monfalcone coal-fired plant in the meantime.

The goal is to minimize energy production from other coal-fired plants, while keeping that from sustainable bioliquids and solid biomass unchanged. The decision was taken following the end of the emergency on gas supplieswhich had led to the use of fuel oil and the increased use of coal for electricity generation.

In a nutshell – declares Minister Pichetto Fratin – let’s stop the fuel-oil power plants and keep the coal-fired ones running at a minimum, in order to always guarantee national energy security. The minister then underlined the work of the government. Diversification policies have enabled us to achieve the goal of saving 700 million cubic meters of gas by 30 September 2023 in advance. renewables has made it possible to activate these new provisions which manage to hold together two of the great objectives: speeding up decarbonisation while guaranteeing the energy security of our country.
