Sports tourism has restarted and returns, with a turnover of over 7.2 billion, to the same levels as in 2019. This is what the 2023 edition of Banca Ifis’s Observatory on the Italian Sport System reveals, which highlights how at the level of system turnover has exceeded 102 billion, with an incidence of 3.4% on GDP. «A figure that acquires even more value if we consider that, also thanks to geo-political tensions, tourist flows recorded 4 million fewer presences than in the pre-crisis period» reads the report.

Spending by sports tourists is growing

According to the Observatory, the per capita expenditure of sports tourists has seen an increase of +9% thanks to the increase in activities carried out during the trip with peaks of +27% for visits to exhibitions, museums and the like and despite the increase in costs , especially of the ticket office, due to inflation. Therefore, the future potential, even in the short term, of tourism in general and sports tourism in particular can only be high. A key element is revealed by the analysis of major sporting events that catalyze the interest of the crowds and involve national and supranational bodies at various levels and objects of global interest. In the comparison, the two major sporting events par excellence were reviewed: the Olympic Games and the World Cup, global phenomena that have an impact on the host countries and cities at various levels. For the latest edition of the Olympics it is calculated that there are over one million fans and more than 1.6 million for the World Cup. Major events that generate significant revenues from 6.5 billion euros from Rio 2016 to 8.3 billion from Tokyo 2020 on the Olympic front and from 9.3 billion euros from Russia 2018 to over 12.3 billion euros from Qatar 2022 for regarding the soccer world cup. A turnover that benefits from many components, in particular the already significant amount of tourist expenditure is added to the core revenues represented above all by TV rights and sponsorships. But beyond the absolute and equally impactful numbers – concludes the Observatory – every major sporting event represents an unrepeatable opportunity to make investments in permanent assets, such as plants and infrastructures, which involve a major renewal for the host country and they are a source of medium-long term value for the local area.

Formula One at Imola

Great catalysts for enthusiasts are also the grands prix. This year Italy will host the “Qatar Airways Grand Prix of Made in Italy and Emilia-Romagna” on the weekend of 19-21 May for the sixth round of the Formula 1 world championship at the “Enzo and Dino Ferrari” racetrack of Imola. More than 160,000 people are expected.
