Final turnout plummeted to 39.8%. It collapses in Lombardy where only 41.6% of voters voted at the close of the polls and it is the lowest figure in 53 years. The lowest turnout so far was recorded in 2010 when 71.9% of Lombards voted. In those elections the main candidates were Roberto Formigoni, who was confirmed for the centre-right for the fourth time as president of the Region and Filippo Penati for the centre-left. Even then, the consultation took place over two days, 28 and 29 March. In the 2018 regional elections, the vote was held in a single day, on 4 March, simultaneously with the political elections, and the turnout was 73.1%.

Turnout at 37.20% instead in Lazio. The definitive data provided by the Viminale, relating to all 378 voting municipalities, confirms the sharp drop in participation compared to the last regional elections of 2018, when it was 66.55%

Pasquino: politicians must create relationships with the people

«Voting is never an exclusively personal choice: it is a relationship between voters and the political offer that candidates make in terms of proposals and reforms. Our candidates often say very similar things to each other, sometimes they say aberrant things that leave no trace on the voter and, above all, they no longer campaign in the area». The political scientist Gianfranco Pasquino tells LaPresse, commenting on the low turnout at the polling stations for the Lombardy and Lazio Regions. «There are no longer those healthy rallies in the town square, where the politician takes the stage and addresses the crowd who stop to listen to me. If political candidates don’t create a relationship with the voters, they don’t go to vote”.
