It happens that a joking exchange photographs the state of a party much better than a long and tiring debate. This is the case of yesterday’s curtain between Matteo Lepore and Stefano Bonaccini. We talk about artificial intelligence and how it is useful in different fields. The mayor of Bologna asks the governor of Emilia-Romagna smiling: “Maybe it will help the Democratic Party…”. Ready reply Bonaccini: «That’s something even more complicated…».

The two (Lepore and Bonaccini) are both well aware of the difficulties of the Democratic Party. Revealed very clearly even in recent days, after the “Giarrusso case”. Saturday’s provocation by the ex Hyena was enough to send the dem into a tailspin (and luckily for the pd Di Maio denied the rumors that he too was about to sign up). Then the tweet from Alessandro Gassman arrived on the Giarrusso case — «I will never vote for you again. Adieux” – which plunged the dem into further despair. Nardella and Bonaccini are forced to return to order the former Hyena to apologize to the Democratic Party. Paola De Micheli declares herself against the “revolving doors”. Categorical Orfini: «Giarrusso has nothing to do with the Democratic Party so he doesn’t enter». In short, delirium. Calenda takes advantage of it: “How sad these entrances are for the dem”. Elly Schlein, however, does not rage: «I don’t deal with the events of the other candidates». And in the meantime, he receives the endorsement from Nicola Zingaretti: «Only she has the courage to change. My denunciation, after her resignation, was not a fit of nerves, it was a cry of alarm. And unfortunately what happened, even after 25 September, demonstrates that the leadership group of the Democratic Party did not have the courage to respond to the party’s crisis».

In the meantime, Bonaccini tries to close the Giarrusso affair, inviting us to «look beyond”. And the pragmatic Beppe Sala, who saw the governor the day before yesterday, is busy with other things and exhorts: “We need a secretary who stays a long time to rebuild the party”. Yes, this is one of the defects of the dem: once a congress is concluded, another creeping one begins with the aim of blowing up the new leader.

And no one can rule out that this proven practice will resume soon. Also because the announced arrival of a new generation at the top of the Democratic Party has displaced the leaders of the currents who fear losing their positions of strength. Andrea Orlando, for example, was forced to “chase” his former pupil Beppe Provenzano, one of the first to support Schlein, in order not to miss a piece of his component. And that he is not happy can be deduced from what he says: “The theme of the renewal of the management group is having a comical outcome, because those who theorize it are often older than those they want to replace”. Zingaretti himself was beaten in time by “his own” Marco Furfaro and Stefano Vaccari, who adhered to Schlein’s motion before him and who now play a leading role. Even Orfini, who supports Bonaccini, has seen Chiara Gribaudo leave the «Young Turks» who prefers to try her own adventure with Schlein. The same happened to Franceschini, to whom Pina Picierno said goodbye to run in tandem with Bonaccini.

In short, there are fewer and fewer dems who follow the directives of their current bosses. And this, we can be sure, will cause new upheavals after the primaries.
