The dem need guidance ASAP. Secretary Enrico Letta knows this and hypothesizes to speed up the road that leads to the vote, especially in view of the first big challenge against the right-wing government: the regional ones in Lazio and Lombardy

Friday afternoon Elly Schlein, vice president of Emilia Romagna, said he wanted to “join the constituent path” of the Democratic Party. A new Pd and an emerging candidate for the secretariat. Now it’s just that Stefano Bonaccini release the reservations on your candidacy. And the president and the deputy will be officially in the race to win the leadership of the dem.

The new secretary is needed immediately, in order to immediately understand what direction the reconstituted Democratic Party will take and, as such, what kind of opposition it will put in place against the right-wing government. For this the secretary Enrico Lettaas assumed by Republicseems to open to the hypothesis of primaries in January – maximum beginning of February. This is because the first major challenge of the regional elections in Lazio and Lombardy is approaching and, for now, the candidates of the progressive camp are moving Third pole by Matteo Renzi and Carlo Calenda. They are the ones who have lined up their candidates: on the one hand Letizia Morattiformer vice president of the region, who will be the opponent of the outgoing president Attilio Fontana, and on the other, in Lazio, Alessio D’Amatoformer health councilor.

A party line headed by a solid leader is an essential condition for the Democratic Party to act as a leading actor in the choice of names. In the 5-star Movement there is Giuseppe Conte, which is preparing an opposition – at least in intentions – to the left of the dem and which, on the waste-to-energy plant, decides to have broken the possible alliance in Lazio with Letta’s party. Relations with the pentastellati broken, it is to be understood whether the Democratic Party will turn to the Third Pole, and therefore to Moratti and D’Amato. On Moratti, above all, the situation is nebulous: the signals are discordant. There are those who say “absolutely not”, such as the former Milanese mayor Giuliano Pisapia, and those who instead seem to want to open the doors, such as the former Minister of Defense, Roberta Pinotti.

For the party not to appear as a swarm of confused and discordant voices, a secretary is therefore needed – or a secretary. And here is a draft of the calendar: by Christmas the names of the official candidates should be presented and, after the confrontation and discussions, at the end of January we would go to vote. Bonaccini remains the very favorite, but beyond the compact wall of the reformist wing, Schlein makes his way.
