Schlein, Bonaccini and the mantra of unity. At least until the 2024 European Championships

The applause of all the old leaders and the various club bosses of the Democratic Party while the new secretary Elly Schlein, in her inauguration speech in the setting of Massimiliano Fuksas’s Cloud at Eur, lashed out at them (“we have an evil to eradicate within us, I never again want to see oddities or irregular things on memberships, club leaders and various caciques. I’m not willing to give up an inch on this») has something surreal. And he reminded more than one parliamentary reporter of the thunderous applause of the whole Parliament while on April 22, 10 years ago, the re-elected president Giorgio Napolitano scolded the parties, all of them, for failing to make the constitutional reforms necessary to guarantee governability and stability.
The applause of the Cloud and Napolitano’s precedent
The chapter on constitutional reforms, as is well known, is still on the table in Italian politics, everything to be written or rewritten. But what is important to underline here is the sense of relief and liberation that those two thunderous applause bring: ten years ago the leadership group of the Democratic Party had crashed precisely on the election of the Head of State, burning one by one names of the caliber of Franco Marini and Romano Prodi (the famous 101) before relying on the bipartisan solution of the outgoing president; Sunday at the assembly of the Pd a good part of that same managerial group knew and wanted to find themselves united around the fresh leadership of the young ex movementist Elly Schlein after months of internal wars, divisions and splits evoked and perhaps even planned. The usual question is: will it last?
Schlein’s narrow margins and the need to embrace Bonaccini
The new secretary, proposing her former challenger in the primaries Stefano Bonaccini as president of the party and having him elected by the assembly practically by acclamation, wanted to immediately give a signal of inclusion and unity. She could not have done otherwise: the primaries open to voters were won by surprise with 53% of the votes, but the congress among the members crowned Bonaccini with 54% against 34%. A diarchy in fact, if not in law, which imposes the utmost caution on the new manager if we want to avoid sensational exits to the right just as the Bersanian-Dalemians of Article 1 are returning from the left.
If the governor declares an end to internal opposition
For his part, Bonaccini, as a good Emilian party man who plays for the “company”, is giving it a generous hand. «Let’s all lend a hand to the great work that awaits us, even victories will come if many work for the same goal – these are the words of the newly elected president -. I accepted the role of president in this spirit, I don’t feel like a minority or an opposition, the Democratic Party is my home. The success of this party concerns us all, we can have different opinions and we do have some, but we will bring them to life in fair confrontation”.
Towards an enlarged secretariat: until when?
It is with this spirit that in the next few hours we will probably move towards an “extended” secretariat to include members of the minority (the names of Alessandro Alfieri, spokesperson for the reformist current, and Pina Picierno, Bonaccini’s deputy in the congressional campaign are mentioned). In other words, collective management, without formalized internal opposition. All in support of the new secretary, therefore, at least until the European elections of 2024 which should hopefully restore the primacy of the Democratic Party within the center-left and perhaps challenge the party of Giorgia Meloni, Brothers of Italy, for the supremacy of first party. On the other hand it was like this even with Matteo Renzi, at least up to the now legendary 41% in the 2014 European Championships. The real challenge for Schlein will start later.
