Less than a month after its release, Piero Rossano’s book is being reprinted. A story about the redemption of the least

Of Mirella Armiero

The novel by Piero Rossano, Sand. Afghanistan rewind (Terra Somnia). A small editorial case, which just a few days after its release is already going into reprint. The story born from love at first sight, or from the author’s encounter with the Arab world, which took place during a business trip and then deepened through readings and studies. Nadir, young protagonist, must undertake a tiring journey in search of his brother who mysteriously disappeared in the United Arab Emirates, where he had sought his fortune by fleeing impoverished Afghanistan and threatened by the dark shadow of the Taliban. The boy, delicate and proud at the same time, resembles one of the ingenious characters who crowd the Arabian Nights (and after all, like many of them, he carries a talisman with him), but he could also have emerged from the seventeenth-century Cunto de li Cunti of the Neapolitan Basile, because his physiognomy descends from a millennial and transcultural reservoir of traditional archetypes and figures.

Travel

Just as the themes of travel and overcoming obstacles are universal topoi, up to the final reunion. But this fairytale frame contains within itself a series of elements which are instead linked to the strictest current events and it could not be otherwise since Piero Rossano boasts a long journalistic career. So here’s that the narrative plan welcomes the most urgent instances of the news of these years, from the contemporary epic of migrations to the danger of religious fundamentalisms and the emergence of new poverty. Nadir sets off full of good hopes but finds himself coming to terms with reality, which first of all means exhausting yourself for hours and hours on construction sites where glittering skyscrapers rise in a few weeks, built by armies of invisible workers because they are forced to work at night and at to rest during the day in the red-hot sheet metal barracks. So here is that the story of Nadir is no longer a fairy tale, but a living and strong testimony of the present time, rendered by the author in plain, flowing, fast language, to make the dialogue with the reader more effective.
