“It is necessary to reintroduce the provinces elected directly by the citizens”. Few words, those of Matthew Salvini, sufficient to deploy the leader of the League in favor of the four different bills presented by Carroccio, Forza Italia, Pd and Fratelli d’Italia to backtrack and re-establish the Provinces with the direct election of presidents and councilors. Indeed, during this afternoon’s question time in the Senate, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport spoke of a “necessary” reform because in this way the Provinces “will go back to doing what they have done brilliantly for a long time”. Currently in Italy there are 76 provinces of ordinary regions, 14 metropolitan cities, six free consortia (the former provinces of Sicily not transformed into metropolitan cities) and four Sardinian provinces.

Salvini also answered questions from senators about the Strait Bridge project at Palazzo Madama, guaranteeing that the government is working “with determination and courage” and, he assures, “we will lay the first stone” of the Messina bridge within two years.
