Reverse on the Mes, only 4 months of stop: from the clash in the majority the hard line of Meloni and Salvini comes out defeated

ROME – After a clash in the majority that went on all night, Giorgia Meloni he must yield to the line of the moderates of the centre-right and to European pressure. In fact, the majority presents a suspension of the ratification of the Mes which provides for a stop of at most four months, pending the completion of the changes to the stability pact and the banking union. Skip the option aired yesterday during a meeting in the House by the Melonian group leader Thomas Foti of a block of one year, linked to the European elections and the renewal of the commission.

A political defeat not only for Foti, but above all for the Prime Minister and the League, who had even proposed a stop indefinitely and who thundered against the mechanism for months. Pass the line of Giancarlo Giorgetti, Raffaele Fitto And Giulio Tremonti, who had realistically indicated autumn as the maximum deadline for approving the Save states, allowing the Mes to enter into force in January 2024, as claimed by Brussels. In the text signed by the majority group leaders it is written: ”In the light of the changes made to the founding treaty of the Mes, following the recent changes in the international context in which the Mes would be called to operate and considering that it is still in the phase of awaiting what may be the new rules of the European Stability Pact, the completion of the banking union and the financial safeguard mechanisms – fundamental issues for the future growth of all the member countries of the European Union and inseparable from the Mes – it is considered appropriate to carry out further investigations into the functioning of the Mes, given the delicacy of the topics covered”, and it is ”resolved pursuant to article 40, paragraph 1, of the Chamber’s Rules, to suspend the examination of AC 712 for a period of 4 months, in light of the changes”.
