Retail trade: in April the value grew by 0.2% but volumes suffered (-0.2%)

Retail sales in April see a +0.2% in value and a decrease of 0.2% in volume. Sales of food goods grew with +0.9% in value and +0.6% in volume while those of non-food goods recorded a decrease of 0.4% in value and -0.7% in volume. This is what the Istat data reveal which show that on a trend basis in April 2023, retail sales increased by 3.2% in value and recorded a decrease in volume of 4.8%. Sales of food goods grow in value (+6.2%) and undergo a decrease in volume (-5.4%), while sales of non-food goods grow moderately in value (+0.4%) and show a decrease in volume (-4.4%).

«In April 2023, compared to the previous month, there was an opposite cyclical trend between the two main product sectors: sales of food goods are growing while those of non-food goods suffer a decrease – reads a note from the Institute -. On an annual basis, we continue to highlight an increase in sales in value, more marked for those of food products, and a decrease in sales in volume.
Among the forms of distribution, sales relating to companies operating on small surfaces and sales outside shops see a downward trend that they have not recorded, respectively, since October and July 2022″.
As far as non-food goods are concerned, heterogeneous trend variations are recorded across product groups. The greatest increase concerns perfumery and personal care products (+7.9%) while pharmaceutical products recorded the most sustained decline (-3.2%).
Compared to April 2022, the value of retail sales is growing for large-scale distribution (+7.2%) and e-commerce (+2.7%) while it decreases for companies operating on small surfaces and for those sales outside stores (-1.1% in both cases).
