Reimbursopoli, sentence confirmed in Cassation for Undersecretary Montaruli, for Cota and Tiramani

The Court of Cassation definitively sentenced the undersecretary of the Augusta Montaruli University (FdI) to one year and six months in prison, for the improper use of the funds of the Piedmont council group, in the years from 2010 to 2014, when she was regional councilor of the Piedmont Region. The supreme judges applied a discount on the sentence compared to the sentence of the Turin Court of Appeal, which in 2021 had sentenced her to one year and seven months. Also confirmed the sentences for the former president of the Region, the Northern League Roberto Cota (one year and seven months) and for the former deputy and former mayor of Borgosesia Paolo Tiramani, also from the League, (one year and 5 months).
Montaruli had entered the regional council with the People of Freedom, when the president was Roberto Cota. She, together with other advisers, had ended up in the judicial storm after the Turin prosecutors had challenged the inflated refunds. The expenses related to dinners, luxury clothes, jewels, bags, but also courses on the use of social networks and books.
The investigators had contested the Montaruli improper expenses for a total of 41,552 eurosin the period from 2010 to 2012. In the first instance she had been sentenced to four months for illegal financing, as she had been reimbursed for an expense of a restaurant for two hundred euros where an electoral meeting was held with Maurizio Marrone, at the time of the events her husband and today regional councilor. The allegations had been re-appealed and Montaruli had been convicted of embezzlement, for having had expenses reimbursed according to the accusation for around 25 thousand euros. In November 2019 the Cassation orders a second trial in the Court of Appeal which ends on December 14, 2021 with the sentenced to one year and seven months.

On the question of reimbursements in Italy there are different sentences and interpretations, and often in conflict with each other, from one region to another, but for episodes that substantially do not differ from each other. This is not conceivable.” Cota also recalls that in 2014, at the end of the preliminary investigations, he asked for an immediate judgment: «Nine years have passed since then. This too will be brought to the attention of the European Court.’
