They all declare that they want to remain united, in Europe as well as in government. But in fact the strategies of FdI, Lega and Forza Italia do not coincide one year after the elections which could reshape the alliances in Strasbourg. The false start is even clearer after yesterday’s afternoon conversation between Matteo Salvini and Marine Le Pen, with the secretary of the League invoking “a common home of the centre-right” and banging his fists: “The League will never go with the left and the socialists . And I do not accept vetoes on our allies”. That is precisely the French of the Rassemblement National and the Germans of Alternative Fur Deutschland, the political forces with which “any agreement is impossible” for Forza Italia and the EPP, as clarified in the morning by the blue leader Antonio Tajani. And Giorgia Meloni is also decidedly cold towards Salvini’s proposal: “There are no negotiations in progress”.
The gaze (of FdI) aimed at Spain
Any evolution will be possible after the vote, this is the reasoning that is being repeated these days in FdI circles: first you have to weigh yourself in the polls. The prime minister, in the Corriere della sera, notes how “awareness is growing that the unnatural agreement between popular parties and socialists is no longer adequate for the challenges that Europe is facing”. Her attention is focused on Spain, she hopes for the exploits of her Vox allies. «In the meantime, you observe, broader alternative alliances to the left are being created in Brussels. It’s a stimulating phase, the Conservatives and Italy can play a central role».
The wish for the status quo in Poland
A role that will be discussed until Thursday in Warsaw, where the ECR group has scheduled three closed-door study days on the topics of the European political agenda for the coming months. The premier – who has just been confirmed president of the European Conservative and Reformist Party – will participate in Wednesday’s meeting together with Mateusz Morawiecki. The two are allies in the European Council, although last week the FdI leader failed to convince the Polish prime minister (and Hungarian president Viktor Orban) to share the conclusions of the European Council on the migration chapter. And consequently Meloni hopes that the elections in the autumn will not change the status quo in Poland. On the field is the former president of the European Council Donald Tusk, who aims to put an end to the PiS government, in power since 2015. Tusk, who is also the former president of the European People’s Party, opposes the rapprochement with the Conservatives, to whom instead, his successor Manfred Weber has been working for months, also splitting Ecr.
«Written agreement», the no to Salvini
A bank game that is also played out on the Italian scene and sees Salvini particularly active these days. His proposal for a “written pact” was snubbed or rejected by FdI and FI: the only one to benefit from the single list, it is objected, “would be Matteo”. «With the League and Salvini there is no problem in making an agreement – explained Tajani -. But like FI and Ppe it is impossible to reach an agreement with AfD and Mrs Le Pen’s party for a very simple reason: they are two anti-European parties and Europe cannot be governed with two anti-European parties». His ideal plan is “a majority with Populars, Conservatives and Liberals”.
The voices of the “nostalgic” Northern League supporters
The conversation between Salvini and the leaders of the National Front, Le Pen and Jordan Bardella (by videoconference rather than in person due to the evolution of the unrest in France), was preceded by the offensive by his MEPs towards FI: «My friend Tajani really prefers to continue to govern with Pd, socialists and Macron?». For the secretary of the League “a slice of the EPP wants to look to the right and sever once and for all the agreements with the left”. And «the only hope of changing Europe – he thinks – is to keep united all that is alternative to the left. Anyone who behaves differently is doing the socialists a favor.’ In the same hours in which the secretary recognized Le Pen’s party as “the only centre-right in France”, the “nostalgic” Northern League supporters recalled that with Umberto Bossi the Carroccio in Strasbourg was always deployed in the Alde, the Alliance of Democrats and of the liberals.
