The fiction ranges on different fronts, from spy to action, without disdaining that ironic and deliberately exaggerated look that make it a product that is sometimes “over the top”

“Data moves everything.” The potential hey risks of a world dominated by the algorithm and from the measurement of every aspect of everyday life and their increasingly widespread manipulation are the ingredients of “Rabbit Hole”, a spy story with Kiefer Sutherland available on Paramount+. The actor, who the genre had consecrated in the figure of Jack Bauer in the success of «24» (historical and beautiful series from the early 2000s) he returns here to tread the stage of seriality giving the face of an obscure, ambiguous and brilliant character, an expert in corporate espionage able to manipulate images, relationships and situations at any cost.

But who is he really? John Weir (this is the protagonist’s name)? What secrets does it hide? On which side of the line between good and evil should we place it? They are all questions that they enchain the viewer right from the start and who do not always manage to emerge and provide answers with extreme clarity. In fact, Weir soon finds himself at the center of a conspiracy machination concocted against him, almost a retaliation for his subtle and cynical capacity for action. Accumulating characters and levels (Weir’s childhood flashbacks bring continuous twists and news to the narration), «Rabbit Hole» is a series that ranges on different fronts, from spy to action, without disdaining that ironic and deliberately exaggerated which make it a product that is sometimes «over the top».

Sutherland is undoubtedly holding the strings, in line with the ambitions of the story even when it becomes convoluted and complicated. «Rabbit Hole» is many things: a warning, a narration come on conspiratorial traits, but also a “divertissement” without frills given the extreme eccentricity of some situations; it is a perfect product for streaming, both for a continuous vision and for a more cadenced one, which lets the information and feeds be deposited the atmosphere of waiting. The creators of the series are John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, the signatures of “This is Us”, thus showing that they know how to range across multiple genres and multiple universes narratives.
