Of Cesare Zapperi

The president of Confindustria is concerned because economic growth is slowing down: Investments are needed. For the Pnrr, Conte’s setting is wrong

We have been hearing about reforms for 30-40 years. Today there is the Pnrr, the resources are there. Reforms must therefore be made, but I don’t hear about them. The president of Confindustria Carlo Bonomi, in Ustica, calls on the government and the majority to keep the promises made because the economy does not wait. Growth is slowing down and that was why last year we called for a policy for low-income households and to stimulate investment. For the leader of the Italian industrialists, the situation has not been tackled with the right attitude. Pauses for reflection, slowdowns, divisions unload on the country that has no time to waste. In the viewfinder there is above all the management of the Pnrr, even if the target identified in the origins: For us the Pnrr was wrong at the origin. We have always contested the setting given by the Conte government to the Pnrr. It was supposed to be support for public funding in addition to that already budgeted by the countries. The problem is that this country takes 15 years to do a public work, so it doesn’t have compatible times. The drawers of the projects have been opened and we have brought them into play the criticisms advanced speaking in Ustica during the meeting entitled the Mediterranean to the challenge of transitions organized by Confindustria Sicily.

We took three big blows – underlines Bonomi -, the crises of 2008, 2010 and 2011. We have capitalized our companies which today are like the German ones, we have invested in research and innovation. Hence the great rebound after the pandemic crisis. And not by divine grace. We Italian entrepreneurs have done our homework and we have done it well. And then a mention of the minimum wage, the subject of conflict between the majority and the opposition: There is talk of a minimum wage of 9 euros, it is not known where this figure came from. All contracts signed by Confindustria are above 9 euros. This demonstrates that collective bargaining is an added value, more is obtained than decree. Are there sectors where you pay little? Yes, but what are they? You are afraid to say it. We know it: commerce, services, cooperatives and fake cooperatives. Why isn’t it done? One is afraid to say who pays little because that is an electoral base. Do you want to make the minimum wage? But tell the truth.
