the first shipment of liquefied natural gas to arrive in Piombino is expected in the night between Thursday 4 and Friday 5 May. During the night, when the ferry traffic stops, the first methane tanker will arrive from Egypt, carrying 170,000 cubic meters of LNG owned by Eni. The LNG will be progressively discharged into the tanks of the Golar Tundra, Snam’s regasification ship that arrived in port about a month ago and will conduct the first tests in the next few days. One scheduled Friday afternoon ceremony in the presence of the Minister of the Environment Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, the extraordinary commissioner Eugenio Giani, president of the Tuscany Region, the CEO of Snam Stefano Venier and the director general Natural Resources of Eni Guido Brusco.

The tests

The LNG load will be used for testing and verifying the operation of the regasification ship, which should go into operation and carry out the first operations by the end of the month. The works on the quay have been almost entirely completed and the 8.8 km long pipeline which will transport the gas to the national network is ready. On April 27, the services conference gave a positive opinion for the release of the authorisation, with the opposition of the Municipality of Piombino. The Hague is missing and must be released by the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security.

The Golar Tundra regasifier ship will be able to deliver 4.5 billion cubic meters of gas a year and thus contribute to the diversification of sources to definitively disengage ourselves from Russian gas imports without compromising our country’s energy security. In addition to this ship, Snam has purchased the Bw Singapore which should arrive in Italy at the end of 2024 to enter service off the port of Ravenna. This ship too has a regasification capacity of 5 billion cubic meters per year. Thanks to these two regasification terminals, Italy’s capacity should increase from 18 billion cubic meters in 2022 to 28 billion by the end of 2024.
