among the most awarded Italian dialogue adapters: he deals with the best world cinema

Of Antonio Castaldo

Valerius Piccolo

In Rome he opened a bookshop with a partner that is a small temple for cinephiles. In homage to Stanley Kubrick it is called Overlook, and has a catalog full of unobtainable things. That of the bookseller, however, is only one of the many souls of Valerio Piccolo from Caserta, who is also a journalist, writer, translator, songwriter, producer of vermouth, and perhaps even more.

More than anything, or rather most of his time, Piccolo is a translator and dialogue adapter. His job consists in adapting the original version of a film to the Italian language and culture. On his desk passed the best of world cinema of the last 20 years: films by Tarantino, Eastwood, Almodvar, up to the latest by Spielberg The Fabelmans, released on December 22 last year. On December 5, in Genoa, Piccolo was awarded his second golden ring at the International Dubbing Festival Voices in the Shadows for the best film adaptation. The greatest professional success that can be attributed to me – he explains – is to go unnoticed. To remain in the shadow of words that have already been written. I just have to choose the right way to render them in our language, without inventing anything new. The Genoese award arrived thanks to the adaptation of Baz Luhrmann’s latest film, Elvis, a complex work also from the point of view of rendering it in Italian because it is set in the southern United States, in a particular context such as the world of music in the embryonic phase of rock and roll. The involvement in this case was above all emotional – adds Piccolo -. As happens to me with certain films, in this case I was moved. The world of music is part of my life. This involvement has perhaps made choosing the right words more challenging. But it certainly helped me enter a dimension similar to the one recreated on the screen. This happened to me before, some time ago, working on the Johnny Cash biopic, Walk the line. In those cases I manage to grasp nuances that otherwise might escape me, and in a certain way I experience first-hand the story I’m translating.

The dubbing

Italian dubbing represents world excellence: The voice actor often learns the trade from his father or brothers, given that in Italy a trade that is handed down within the family. For me it is of great satisfaction to have managed to establish myself despite coming from another environment. Piccolo’s family is a triple concentrate of casertanit. His cousin Francesco is the celebrated screenwriter and writer who has put the city at the center of some of his highly successful books. His father represented basketball for years in a community that lived for the ball in slices. he was one of the founders of Juvecaserta with his brother, and then he was a coach and specialized journalist.

Football

As a boy, Valerio, who is now 54, also proved himself on the playing fields as a boy: I played at a decent level, up to Serie B. Of course given my 1.70m, my role was playmaker. But I was able to make myself respected with other weapons, shooting and defense for example. Recently, the building where Juvecaserta plays the Serie B championship today was named after his father Romano and his uncle Santino: Growing up in basketball was fundamental. Everything for me born on the basketball court. I’ve learned not to give up, to push myself beyond my limits, always trying to jump higher. For the people of Caserta who lived through those years, it was a training ground for common life.
