Piantedosi on the landings of migrants: “Corrections are needed”

Italy wants to assume a position of “responsibility” towards the possible agreement on migration which, however, must also be demonstrated towards “Italian and European citizens” for a reform that would otherwise be “destined to fail in reality”. These are the words of the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi speaking in the round of the table at the Internal Affairs Council. “I don’t want to express a clearly contrary position, but we have to imagine the possibility of further negotiations on some points”

«I must point out that in the last year, faced with a dramatic increase in flows in the central Mediterranean, European solidarity with countries of first entry has translated into a redistribution of around 1,500 people overall who, you will understand, well below the pur limited commitments undertaken and certainly the failure of the principle of redistribution,” he added. «I remember these events because they are issues that are the subject of very strong attention in the country where the memory of the tragedy of Cutro is still alive and where Lampedusa from an oasis has been transformed into a center for the management of migrants with very heavy damage to the local socio-economic fabric. The position we intend to take today is certainly one of responsibility, but one of responsibility that we must also have towards Italian citizens and also towards all European citizens to whom we cannot propose a reform that would in fact be doomed to fail. So in the terms in which the latest negotiating proposals were presented to us, we believe that in short there are still many things to do».
