“Ownership of the relationship with the EPP is permanently in our hands. We are the government’s guarantors: we will keep the bar straight. Tajani is the best ferryman, in due course the best leadership will emerge”, the Undersecretary of Defense tells us

Matthew Perego he says it convinced: “The scepter of Atlanticism is permanently in the hands of Forza Italia. As well as the ownership of the relationship with the Ppe”. International tensions reflecting on internal ones. Or maybe not? “It is certainly not a competition between allies, let alone. The important thing is that the government, as a whole, keeps faith with Euro-Atlantic values”, says the Undersecretary of Defense. And he too says it in spite of those who, in FdI, claim to be the privileged interlocutor of American intelligence. “Berlusconi leaves us a legacy of very solid relations with Washington. I remember his speech to Congress: 25 minutes and 18 standing ovations. And I don’t remember any recent premiers or political leaders who can claim a similar privilege”. There is, however, no desire to fuel controversy. “To defend a tradition, if anything, yes”. In short, Perego does not have to support the criticisms of those who say that Berlusconi, with his imprudent friendship with Putin, has compromised the goodness of FI’s Euro-Atlantic relations. “The core values of FI’s political culture are set in stone. These are the guarantor, pro-European, Atlanticist, Catholic and liberal values on which President Berlusconi has built not a party but a recognizable and inimitable political community. It is FI that is a central and decisive member of the EPP and it is FI that has a strong pro-European history thanks also to the experience of Minister Antonio Tajani. We will not leave the scepter of Atlanticism and Europeanism to others. And I believe that this is valid as a guarantee for the government agenda: the centre-right will keep the bar straight”.
