The tensions between trade unions and the management of Popular Bank of Bari they show no signs of decreasing. So much so that an employee strike by the end of March is not excluded. Last Tuesday, in fact, the company has convened the representatives for a meeting which formally provided for the illustration of the new industrial plan. But no one showed up at the headquarters of the bank controlled by Medio Credito Centrale (MCC).
Leaner accounts thanks to workers
In recent days it was the managing director, Cristiano Carrus, who spoke of an improving situation of the bank. But the staff believes that the step forward (if indeed there is) is due to the sacrifices of those who accepted the salary cut. That is to say – wrote the unions – on Rol, solidarity contribution, supplementary pension, mortgage rates, overtime pay and anything else that impacts workers in terms of climate. The point is that the assemblies held so far have unanimously decreed the calling of the strike against the Carrus line. The last meetings between the workers will be held on 9 and 10 March respectively in Pescara and Teramo and then eventually there will be a date (the meeting and the protest in Bari). Nobody accepted the CEO’s attempt to calm spirits with a slight decrease in the interest rates applied to employees who took out a mortgage to purchase a house. Confirming the linked variable rate structure at the ECB rate which could allow benefits in any future scenarios of downward parameters – Carrus communicated – the company choice to support employees in the current macroeconomic scenario was to reduce the floor and the cap bringing them from the current 0.9% to 5.5% % at 0.5% and 2% respectively.

The employees of Pop in Bari feel discriminated given that Mcc colleagues benefit from a fixed rate of 0.6%. And then there is the issue of the credit interest rate (those active) for employee deposits which drops by 0.4% on the ECB rate for amounts up to 100 thousand euros and by 0.6% for amounts over 100 thousand euros. The latter is considered by the unions to be a mocking decision that takes money away from the workers. This is why the road to the first strike in the history of Popolare di Bari (since 1960, the year of the bank’s foundation) is approaching. Like the deadline of the Board of Directors.
