According to this plan B the European commissioner is the right personality to “accompany” Schlein: an all-round reformist, equipped with a solid culture of government, with many international relations, he would avoid further disbanding of the party. He would be a sort of “guarantor” for everyone. But so far this hypothesis has been kept in the strictest confidence.

Meanwhile, however, there is today to manage. Even those who took sides against Schlein at the congress do not want to attack the leader in difficulty. “If you fail, the Democratic Party fails, let’s face it,” he explains Alexander Alfieri to a party mate who would like a more determined line from the dem reformists. Schlein, who is meeting the secretariat today, continues to assure: «I will guarantee maximum pluralism». However, for the avoidance of doubt, Bonaccini would like a policy that gives his area greater protection: «If we want to try to influence the party agenda and to truly live pluralism in the Democratic Party we should think about structuring ourselves as an area,” he said yesterday in a meeting of his motion.

The idea is to give life to a cultural area that should be coordinated by the Senate Simon Malpezzi and in the Chamber of Frederick Giannasi. An area, not a current, with a built-in expiration date (that of the next congress), which should scrap the old components. Guerini did not oppose this hypothesis, while Orfini raised some objections: «If the motion is to become an enlarged reformist base, I I can’t agree».

The goal is to expand the area by also involving the mayors of the civic lists: «We must not make the mistake of passing ourselves off as those who want to make a new stream», is the argument that is made. «Also because – Bonaccini reiterates for the umpteenth time – since the evening of the primaries I have said that I would never, ever have given birth to my current».
