The problem with Pd secretary Elly Schlein today seems to be her own party, rather than her opponents

Those who believe that the secretary of the Democratic Party, Elly Schlein, is ambiguous are only partially right. In reality, in recent months she has chosen. You have reabsorbed Pier Luigi Bersani’s secessionists, that is, a fragment of the left. You have participated in demonstrations with the Five Star Movement, at the cost of arousing some questions and suspicions about the Atlanticist choice. And you have distanced yourself from what remains of Carlo Calenda and Matteo Renzi’s Third Pole. It is not even said that this drift, completed with an increasingly marked presence in the square, does not give it that primacy of the oppositions to which it yearns for the Europeans. The question will be on which agenda, and therefore to do with what. Yesterday, perhaps aware that she had confused herself a little too much with Giuseppe Conte’s anti-NATO and “pacifist” slogans and with Beppe Grillo’s ramshackle proposals on the “citizenship brigades”, she took a quick step back. On Ukraine, it aligned itself with the head of state Sergio Mattarella, who has never allowed misunderstandings about Italian foreign policy. And he reiterated that on that issue there is “a sidereal distance” between the Democratic Party and grillism. Dutiful clarification, accompanied by the obvious commitment to promote peace as the final goal; and from an invitation to the rest of the minorities to unite on social issues, because otherwise Giorgia Meloni’s right will win for a long time.

But the problem of the Pd secretary today seems to be her own party, rather than hers opponents; and, on the Russian aggression against Ukraine, the attitude of the M5S which is only waiting to stab it again, accusing it of being too pro-US. The encirclement, therefore, is double: inside and outside the Democratic Party. Even if being surrounded and then receiving two minutes of applause from the leadership of one’s party, as happened yesterday, may appear to be a contradiction. And indeed it is, although not for a Democratic Party that has long been accustomed to burning leaders by pretending to support them; and with a nomenklatura that threatens splits, it says it is ready to “acknowledge” that it has no spaces; but then he hesitates to draw the consequences, because in reality the room for maneuver and the electoral pool are limited. The former mayor of Palermo, Leoluca Orlando, maintains that Schlein could be “torpedoed shortly” by the leaders who also supported it. The leader yesterday warned that the “game of wearing down the secretaries” will not work with her. “We are here to stay and stay together,” she warned. It is a signal to the enemies, and at the same time the confirmation of a highly tense situation. You burn the accusation of subordination to grillismo, relaunched yesterday by the candidate for the secretariat you defeated, Stefano Bonaccini. And Schlein’s attack on Renzi, recalling her relationship with Silvio Berlusconi, appeared to be an attempt to exorcise the growing frond by evoking one of the most detested exes by the Democratic Party. But it is said that it will be enough to appease a latent discontent.
