The governor asks for the Campania congress

Face to face was inevitable. And not so much because the Regionals are at stake. For those you have to wait. By her own admission, the European elections are Elly Shlein’s testing ground and losing votes in Campania is a luxury that the secretary cannot afford. So four days ago, two days after having torpedoed his son, the leader of the Democratic Party picked up the phone and called Vincenzo De Luca to ask him for a meeting. The two agreed to meet yesterday.

So about a quarter past two in the afternoon, Schlein and the governor met face to face at the Hotel Terminus. A private room, with the door strictly closed for an interview that lasted 55 minutes. Before the meeting, De Luca meets with his parents, who ask him: Will I tell you about the third term?. Phlegmatic and mocking, the president of Campania replied: We are two and a half years away from our regional elections… Who knows what may happen in the meantime. Perplexed looks from the bystanders, then De Luca specifies, to avoid misunderstandings (after all, he also did it with Schlein): I’ll run again anyway. That is, with, without or against the Democratic Party.

This was clear to the secretary and there was no need to dwell on the subject any longer. Schlein, who arrived there on a peace mission, was quick to say that the dismissal of Piero De Luca as deputy group leader was not a disgrace to his father: It wasn’t a transversal revenge, as you have seen, I renewed all the management groups to give a signal .

De Luca shook his head, but he immediately made it clear to the leader that, if they really had to talk, it was something else that needed to be discussed. Here in Campania, in the Democratic Party – he began – there is a problem of political viability, of democracy, but why don’t you do this c … of congress?. There is the problem of the Caserta cards, objected Schlein. But what problem? We cancel them, they are made new and the congress is held, still being with the unbearable commissioner, replied De Luca, who no longer wants the commissioner sent from Rome to the region.

Immediately afterwards, the governor addressed an issue that was important to him. Note that the funds from the development and cohesion plan have been blocked for three months by the Draghi government, now Lease which has been holding them still for seven months. We need it. Opposition also means fighting on this. Fortunately for the Democratic Party on differentiated autonomy, another topic of the conversation, the positions were closer. The meeting finished without kisses and hugs, with De Luca remaining convinced that this opposition is a cross between the Zecchino d’Oro and Lotta continua.

The secretary, however, completed her mission he breathed a sigh of relief: although we both raised our voices, the face-to-face didn’t end in a fight. But in Schlein’s ears, before he left, the echo of the words spoken in the Vespa farm by another regional president, Michele Emiliano, still resounded: The statutes of Campania and Puglia have no limits. I don’t know how the Democratic Party can stop De Luca’s desire to run again. After all, in Puglia the Democratic Party has 19 percent and we won with 47 percent. How we get to this result, De Luca and I know, some in Rome don’t.
