After days of negotiations, the constituent committee of the Democratic Party has found the square on the new Manifesto of values which will inaugurate the new era of the party. The new charter will be submitted to the assembly of delegates with the possibility that it may be modified after the celebration of the congress and the coronation of the new secretary. Here’s what it contains.
A new Pd
“We believe that the strength of a country lies in the strength of its social ties”. This is the incipit of the Pd’s manifesto of values. The first chapter focuses on three points: “social justice, inclusion and equality”. Emphasis is also placed on the defense of the Constitution (especially as regards the fight against inequalities), on the participation of citizens and on the union between “a dynamic economy and an inclusive welfare”. The constituent dem supports the need for “a regulatory and innovative state capable of highlighting the transformative capacity of companies, while correcting and avoiding market failures”
European Union
“Europe is our common home, our protection, our opportunity. Only greater European integration will make it possible to develop policies capable of protecting the national interest on an adequate scale”, we read. European integration, strengthening the EU’s role in the world and international cooperation. The chapter also devotes a passage to war, emphasizing the “defense of peace, democracy and human rights” and at the same time reiterating the condemnation of “all wars, starting with the Russian invasion of Ukraine”
Fight against inequalities
Article 3 of the Constitution at the center of the third chapter: equality between citizens. How? Guaranteeing civil and social rights, from the recognition of the requests of the LGBT+ community to gender equality. “We want – add the dem constituents – to fight to eliminate all poverty because insufficient living standards and vulnerabilities deny people’s dignity and freedom, thus questioning their role within society”. The emphasis is also placed on welfare policies: from health to education. Two points that “must be the central nucleus of an articulated strategy that invests in people, in the multidimensionality of their condition, to reduce inequalities”
Economic, environmental and social sustainability
The manifesto speaks openly of a “climate emergency”. “We can no longer afford delays or hesitations – we read – neither in the transition towards a world without fossil fuels, nor in the strengthening of social protections. We believe that climate justice and social justice can and must be achieved simultaneously”. At the same time, the wise men of the Democratic Party underline the role of companies in the ecological transition process, thanks to “their ability to open up to social and environmental issues, integrating them into their productive and employment fabric”.
Defense of the Constitution and no to presidentialism
Participation and defense of the Constitution. The no to presidentialism is also reaffirmed in the new Charter of Values. “For us democracy is a horizon of emancipation and freedom”, we read. The emphasis is also placed on the crisis of democratic participation and on how it should be resolved: through “choices of vision, rejecting all shortcuts, starting with presidentialism, which compress the spaces for participation and which renounce to find the right balance between principles of representation and governance”.
