“The commitment to the new National Labor Contract for Bankers will be decisive, with constructive, intense and far-sighted industrial relations, matured even in the most difficult moments of the pandemic and in the subsequent phases, with important national and company agreements”. At the ABI Assembly, in the words of the president, Antonio Patuelli, the theme of work intersects various passages of the report, in the passages in which he speaks of artificial intelligence, organizational innovation and above all of the employment contract which expired last December and renewed.

Protect the purchasing power of workers

Going into the matter, Patuelli explained that «we need to update the National Contract, protect the purchasing power of workers, encourage second-level bargaining which also includes “company bonuses”». The banking world appears increasingly diversified and competitive and “is changing very rapidly even after the 2019 National Contract which has already introduced many useful innovations that have favored the changes and continuity of all banking activities even in the toughest phases of the pandemic” , continues the president of Abi.

Technological innovation must be regulated

«Continuous technological innovations, the quality and ever-increasing complexity of banking work require forward-looking and sustainable contractual updates and also continuous attention to prevent undue commercial pressure», says Patuelli. Technological innovations, «require rules and legal certainty that guarantee against abuses of all kinds. Artificial intelligence requires ethical principles, transparency, social responsibility for security and data protection. Needs control
human and ethical aspects of algorithms, to protect freedom and responsibility”.

Contract renewal agenda

On the agenda for the renewal of the 280,000 bank contract there are now the results of the workers’ meetings on the union platform which will be announced shortly and then the presentation of the document to Abi’s union and labor affairs committee. According to what emerged at the twenty-second congress of the Fabi, a first meeting could be scheduled for July to present and explain the requests to the bankers. Formal passages, where, however, form also becomes substance, even more so today, when there is an unprecedented situation at the negotiating table. Compared to the past, the discontinuity is given by the choice of the Intesa Sanpaolo group to revoke the mandate of representation to ABI on the contract and to be present at the negotiation with the formula of the permanent invitation.

Union demands

The union document contains all-round claims, from the reduction of working hours from 37.5 to 35 hours, to the improvement of smart working protections, to limits for contracted activities, up to the restoration of the full calculation of the severance indemnity relationship. However, the economic part assumes its centrality, given the size of the amount requested: the unions have in fact put on the table an increase of 435 euros for the average reference level (3A4L, third area, fourth level) which projected onto the highest level of the executive framework (4th) reaches around 800 euros. The amount takes into account the level of inflation and a share of productivity recovery. The Ipca Nei index, which is considered as a reference for contract renewals and which Istat announced at the beginning of June, is still forecast at 6.6% for 2023. In the following years, forecasts are for its decline: to 2.9% in 2024, 2% in 2025 and 2% in 2026.
