Antonio Panzeri he leaves prison and goes under house arrest with the electronic bracelet: the decision was made Brussels council chamber about the main defendant of the so-called Qatargate. The release should take place in the next few hours.
The former Italian MEP of the Democratic Party had been under arrest since 9 December last year, accused of corruption for having received money from the Qatari government to try to influence the position of the community institutions vis-à-vis Qatar. In his house they had been kidnapped 600,000 euros in cash.
In January Panzeri had admitted his responsibilities and had closed a plea agreement with one year’s imprisonment: precisely by virtue of his repentant status the former politician will be able to finish serving his sentence at home.
As part of Qatargate now remain in prison Eva KailiGreek MP and former Vice-President of the Eurochamber and the Belgian MP Marc Tarabellaboth of the socialist group.
