On the Viminale, Salvini has his reasons

It is said that there is a veto by Giorgia Meloni to Matteo Salvini’s aspiration to return to the Viminale, even if, apart from some denied “quotes”, there is no evidence of all this. The Ministry of the Interior is among the most important and, in a complicated phase like the current one, the management of public order can present significant problems.

Beyond the question of irregular immigration (on which there are differences between Salvini and Meloni on the form of the contrast to be implemented but there is harmony on the objective of limiting it as much as possible), it is a question of being able to keep under control the movements announced for the autumn that all predict “hot”. Is Salvini, known for his bombastic style, the right man to handle these situations? It is more than legitimate to doubt it, given the far from reassuring precedents. On the other hand, his positions are very well known, so if Meloni has made an alliance with him, he cannot neglect the requests that follow..

If he had had a hostility to the positions of the Northern League leader he would have had to exclude the alliance with him. Instead he did it and now it is only natural that he takes into account the needs of his main ally in the coalition that will support his government. There is no scandal in this: it can be a serious mistake, because Salvini at the Viminale represents a danger, but it is a risk that should never have been calculated before, now it could be greater to inflict a humiliation on the League that would make it difficult to start a government action that already has formidable problems in front of it. Of course, it would be better for everyone to find a solution that limits the potential damage to the maximum and is digestible by all parties involved and probably the potential premier will try to go down this road, however inaccessible.
