Green light from the Senate guarantee council for a resolution that provides for the restoration of cut annuities for former senators. These are those relating to before 2012 when, adapting to the pension reform, it was decided that the contributory and no longer salary system should also be applied to parliamentarians.

The decision, anticipated by Repubblica and dal Fatto, came with a vote which – according to what was reported by parliamentary sources – saw the no of the members of the Lega and FdI, the yes of a member of the former M5s council and the abstention of the Democratic Party, while the president, the blue Luigi Vitali, voted yes.

Resolution passed in the last session

The resolution was voted in the last session of the parliamentary body which was renewed with the new legislature and was so far composed of Luigi Vitali (former FI senator), Ugo Grassi (former M5s), Alberto Balboni of Fdi, Pasquale Pepe of the Lega and Valeria Valente of the Pd. Based on a sentence of the Constitutional Court, which referred to golden pensions – it is reported – the resolution decided for the temporary application of the cut, making it end with the start of the new legislature.

Ex M5S Grassi, stop cutting out of respect for Charter principles

Why did I vote to restore annuities for pre-2012 senators? «Because I am a jurist, I believe in the rule of law and in the principles of the constitutional system. Not doing so would have been in conflict with my conscience and what I believe in as a lawyer. I assume all responsibility for the decision I have taken, I did it in the name of my conscience and my legal technical competence ». This is how former M5S senator Ugo Grassi replied, who voted yes to the restoration of cut annuities for former senators relating to before 2012. «The resolution – he added – concerned pre-2012 annuities, not all of them. All annuities were already cut in 2012 with a law from Parliament, adapting the annuity to the contributory method. So when they say: have you increased your annuity? Absolutely not, post-2012 annuities have not been increased”, added the former parliamentarian who left the M5S in 2019, then joined the League and now plays in “Italy in the center”.
