The government has outdone itself: introduced the umpteenth amnesty managing to not get a single penny out of it. In recent weeks, insiders and journalists wondered how much the new scrapping of files could have yielded – that is, the installment of tax debts with the annexed cancellation of penalties and interest – for the financing of the budget maneuver. The answer was given by the State General Accounting Office in the technical report: zero. On the contrary, the tax amnesties will cost taxpayers 2.1 billion euros in about a decade, despite the fact that President Meloni presented them at the press conference as “advantageous for the state”.
