Here are the ten most expensive cities in the world

The Economist’s latest Worldwide Cost of Living (WCOL) survey shows that prices have risen an average of 8.1% in local currency terms over the past year in the world’s major cities. This is the fastest increase in 20 years, reflecting a global cost-of-living crisis triggered by war in Ukraine and continued covid-19 restrictions in China. New York topped the rankings for the first time, tied with Singapore for the eighth time in ten years. Together they overtook Tel Aviv (Israel) now in third place. Also in the top ten are Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Zurich, Geneva, San Francisco, Paris, Copenhagen and Sydney. Damascus (Syria) and Tripoli (Libya) remain the cheapest of the 172 cities covered by the survey.
