A letter from Leopardi

The National Library of Naples acquires a new autograph text by Giacomo Leopardi: it is a private letter from the poet of Recanati to his cousin Giuseppe Melchiorri. The Ministry of Culture has exercised the right of first refusal securing the autograph and preventing it from being sold to private individuals. The letter further enriches Leopardi’s collection of the National Library of Naples, which holds the original works of the poet and most of the correspondence.

Since 2018 acquired six letters

«Leopard’s correspondence proves to be of fundamental importance for a greater understanding of the poet’s personality and thought – underlines the director of the Library, Maria Iannotti – revealing artistic, poetic and personal aspects linked to specific places and historical moments. The handwritten testimonies of the letters make it possible to ascertain and confirm facts already known in the literature and cited in the published copies. We thank the Directorate General for Libraries of the Ministry of Culture, which with your intervention allowed us from 2018 to today the acquisition of six leopardian letters of particular interest bibliographic and historical”.

The Epistolary of 1883

The last acquired is the letter signed and dated Recanati 29 August 1823 addressed to his cousin, Marquis Giuseppe Melchiorri, in Rome: it was purchased folded and harnessed in the first volume of the poet’s Epistolariopublished by Le Monnier, Florence, 1883.

In 2020 the last purchase

Another letter from the poet had been purchased by the National Library in November 2020: it is a missive written in Bologna on 18 December 1825 and addressed to Count Carlo Emanuele Muzzarelli, a well-known intellectual in the circle of the capital. Graduated in law and active at the tribunal of the Sacra Rota, he was a humanist and man of letters himself, a member of various academies from Arcadia to the Lincei, and mainly published occasional verses. Among these is an Ode in honor of Giacomo Leopardi, who was very happy to certify to his contemporaries the appreciation of a prominent figure for the whole nation. Leopardi in the letter informs his friend that he had that Ode published in «Bibliographic and urban theatrical news or Il Caffè di Petronio». In regular type we read: «Taking advantage of the license that you have granted me, I have had your beautiful quatrains printed here in a periodical sheet of which I am sending you a copy. If you would like some other specimen, I would see if I could serve you».
