«The sudden and unilateral decision taken by Mayor Melucci to revoke the powers of the representatives of the 5 Star Movement in the city council and in addition has no justification, as the Movement in Taranto, in fact and in deeds, has simply promoted initiatives in line with the program signed in the past administrations with the citizens’ contract”. This is the opinion of Senator Mario Turco, vice president of the M5S, and of the honorable Leonardo Donno, regional coordinator of the M5S Puglia, regarding the crisis in relations between the mayor pd Melucci and the pentastellata delegation to the Municipality of Taranto.
Identity issues
Turco and Donno recall having presented to the city council, through the councilor Mario Odone, «a motion concerning the former Ilva, with which we asked for the closure of the polluting sources, the introduction of greater environmental and health protections and we expressed our against the reintroduction of the penal shield”. These, they add, «are identity-related and non-negotiable issues for the M5S. These are political objectives that we declared during the electoral campaign and sharing them was the premise of our support for Mayor Melucci’s candidacy. Now we ask ourselves: what has changed? Does Mayor Melucci no longer share these objectives?
The rumors about the involvement of the Third Pole
Turco and Donno also speak of “increasingly insistent rumors of a dialogue” between the mayor and the representatives of Italia Viva and Azione, to which they would like to extend the majority. «But – they object – these parties, with their exponents, in our memory and those of Taranto, have never really spent themselves for the good of our city. And I’ve always been in favor of the penal shield, coal and drills. It is clear that an opening to them would mean a total change of course on the part of the mayor, and the loss of the common objective of the ecological transition and the economic, social and cultural conversion of the territory”.
