Mother deputies will be able to breastfeed their babies in the Chamber at Camera-Corriere.it

The deputies mothers they will be able to enter the House with their children during the sittings in the Chamber, participating in parliamentary work, and breastfeed them in the hemicycle until they turn one year old. This was decided by the Council for the Regulations of Montecitorio.

Breastfeeding will future «in special positions located in the last upper row of the hemicycle or in a reserved gallery, previously and specifically identified by the College of Quaestors”.

The approved opinion – explained by a member of the Board – follows the agenda “on the methods of participation of mother deputies in parliamentary work” in the internal budget of Deputies presented by Gilda Sportiello of the Movimento 5 Stelle and approved in the session of 27 July 2022. In particular, the provision derogates from the article of the Internal Regulations of Deputies on the basis of which «no person outside the Chamber may, under any pretext, enter the Chamber where his members”. Therefore, it allows the deputy who requests it to enter the Chamber during the sittings, with her child, within the child’s first year of age, to allow her to breastfeed without having to interrupt her participation in the sitting. For this purpose in the Chamber it will be possible to use special positions located in the last upper row of the hemicycle, or in a reserved gallery in the Chamber.
