Southwest Airlines, the world’s largest low-cost airline, halted hundreds of flights for about an hour due to a problem with the servers that manage the operational part. It was the same carrier that asked the Federal Aviation Administration – the agency of the US Department of Transport that regulates civil aviation – to intervene by blocking all its departing planes because it was no longer able to manage the activities correctly. From what emerged a firewall – a device for the security of the company’s internal network – went haywire blocking the passage of information.
The consequences
According to updated data from the FlightAware platform, the US low-cost airline has limited the number of cancellations to 9, but over four out of ten (1,762) take-offs scheduled for Tuesday 18 April took place with a significant delay. Operations resumed about an hour after requesting the operational shutdown, while the planes already at high altitude continued regularly towards their intended destination.
Christmas chaos
yet another technical hitch for Southwest, four months after the chaos at the end of 2022. In December the company had to cancel – also due to the bad weather that affected a large part of the USA – 16,700 flights between Christmas and New Year’s Eve (December 21-31 ) involving 2.3 million passengers. The inconvenience cost the carrier $100 million a day, not counting the reparations and when customers will use the miles given as compensation.
