TRIESTE On the Regeni case, “no hesitation”: Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani told Ansa today, Tuesday 24 January, on the sidelines of the Conference on the Balkans underway in Trieste.
“We continue to work to reach the truth, so that those guilty of the murder are convicted. We will continue to insist with Egypt that full light can be shed and the culprits can be prosecuted. But we have to talk to Egypt on other issues because we have a duty to guarantee the stability of North Africa and Libya », she added.
«President al-Sisi raised the Regeni problem himself, he said that Egypt will do everything to eliminate the obstacles that exist and which make dialogue with Italy difficult. I listened and we will see if the words will be followed by deeds».
Tajani continues, referring to the meeting he had with the Egyptian president and the Regeni case: «Over Libya, Egypt has a certain influence, as does Turkey. We spoke with Turkey, with Tunisia, with Algeria, where the Prime Minister was yesterday».
The minister recalled that «Egypt is a large country in the Mediterranean area, we must ensure that there is stability. Let us not underestimate the risks of terrorism. In the Sahel area the presence of terrorism is smoldering, in Somalia there is a strong terrorist offensive, and then in Congo, in sub-Saharan Africa… Egypt is decisive in the fight against terrorism».
Therefore, “there are many issues to be addressed but this does not detract from our determination to ask for clarity on all the elements concerning the Regeni affair”.
Just tomorrow, Wednesday 25 January, Minister Tajani will answer the question time in parliament on the Regeni case, after his visit to Egypt last weekend: “I will say what I think and what happened,” he explained.
