The announcement of the choice of the Fiera di Rho as venue for the speed skating competitions for the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics is imminent. After the go-ahead from the IOC for a temporary structure, the control room has now decided, preferring the Milanese solution to the other option on the table, the Turin Oval. The announcement in favor of the Fiera di Rho will be formally taken by the board of directors of the Milano-Cortina Foundation set for 18 April.

The confrontation between Milan and Turin, which had proposed the structure of the 2006 Olympics, triggered a tough clash between Matthew Salvini And Joseph Sala during the control room at Palazzo Chigi. The two would have clashed over the choice of site: if the mayor supports the Fiera hypothesis, the leader of the League has been pushing for Turin and the Oval Lingotto option for some time. Salvini asked that the costs borne by the Fiera Foundation be made explicit, Sala threatened to turn to the Court of Auditors, deeming it illogical to give up on Milan. “Bad intervention” retorted Salvini, who then asked what the mayor did during the Conte 2 and Draghi governments. “I confirm what has been said” replied Sala. Salvini also proposed hearing the reasons for the mayor of Turin and the president of the Piedmont region.
