Meloni: “We will change the rules on abuse of office”. And he opens up to the modification of crimes against the Public Administration

Against the so-called “fear of the signature”, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announces during the Anci assembly that the rules on abuse of office will have to be reformed: “It is necessary to better define, starting from the abuse of office, the penal provisions concerning public administrators”. Today, in the words of the president, the rules are too flexible: “In the public administration steeped in bureaucratic constraints, mayors are too often called upon to interpret things that make their choices risky.”

The premier also finds support from the opposition: the dem Dario Nardella says to the Messenger: “We are at the paradox that an administrator risks both if he signs an act, for abuse of office, and if he does not sign it, for omission”. And she glosses, emphasizing how for years mayors of all political stripes demand change.

The Italian prime minister herself confronted the Anci audience with the data: “The statistics are dramatic: 93 percent disputes of abuse of office are resolved with acquittals or dismissals”. And the mayor of Florence confirms, albeit elsewhere, Meloni’s words and declares that: “Mayors, in Italy, have much more responsibilities than instruments of government . It is no coincidence that for years we have been witnessing dozens of investigations into local administrators. The vast majority of these proceedings then end up with a dismissal, but not always”. to be able to sign serenely, to know today for tomorrow whether or not that signature constitutes a crime, to have certainties regarding the perimeter of the lawful and the unlawful“.

Giorgia Meloni concludes by declaring that the government, having taken note of these knots to be resolved, “will get to work to modify a series of crimes against the public administration, starting with the abuse of office”.
