For the premier it is the first international summit in which she participates. Controversy over silence regarding the Regeni case

Giorgia Meloni he made his first appearance as premier at an international summit (after the trip to Brussels last week) presiding over the COP 27 meeting in Sharm El-Scheikh, Egypt. This is where the new climate meeting organized by the United Nations is held, where the heads of state and government will reaffirm the international commitments on reducing emissions made during previous summits, as in the case of Glasgow, in November 2021. For Meloni it is mainly how to prepare a series of bilateral meetings that could define this government’s foreign policy.

This morning he has already met the British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the president of the state of Israel Isaak Herzog, countries to which he plans to visit in the weeks to come. Upon her arrival she was greeted by Egyptian President Al-Sisi, but it is not yet defined whether she will hold a bilateral meeting with him. In the background there are diplomatic relations between Italy and Egypt, which remained fluctuating after the killing of Giulio Regeni, whose responsibilities remain uncertain also due to the shyness with which the Egyptian authorities collaborate with the Italian judiciary (they refused to provide the addresses of the agents who allegedly contributed to the death of the Italian researcher). Since the birth of the government, Meloni has not made any statements on this point.

The premier’s speech at the COP 27 plenary session is expected around 6 pm.
