Tax wedge and statutory minimum wage
«The impact of the cut we are making is different from that made by my predecessors, and it is not finished. Cutting taxation on labor must be the priority» says Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The cut in the contribution wedge decided with the maneuver and with the decree of May 1 «has an important impact with galloping inflation-she added she-she. It is the most important thing you can do at this stage. That’s not all: the first challenge is to make these measures structural, the second is to extend them further”. And hence the connection with the issue of the legal minimum wage: “Which risks becoming a boomerang,” says Meloni. And he explains the meaning of his words: «We have starvation wages, the problem of inflation, it is said that a legal minimum wage must be imagined and then it is also said that lowering the wedge and strengthening payrolls is useless: these are things that they stand. It is better to cut the wedge than to make the legal minimum wage, which is good on a philosophical level but in its application it risks being a boomerang”.
Fight against tax evasion
The other important issue is that of the fight against tax evasion: «I don’t think that the State should hunt for revenue. The state must be simple, clear and just. It’s the only way to fight tax evasion in Italy» explained Meloni. For this reason, the government will guarantee “at least 3,900 new hires to the Revenue Agency”.
