Mattarella recalls the massacre in Piazza della Loggia: “It was the subversion of the right. Memory is the root of the future”

The death of eight people in Piazza della Loggia was caused by right-wing evasion. He recalled it, on the occasion of the anniversary of the Brescia massacre, Sergio Mattarella. “Eight people killed. Over a hundred wounded – recalls the Head of State in his message – The city of Brescia devastated. The Republic wounded. So much innocent blood was shed on the morning of 28 May 1974 in Piazza della Loggia by the strategists of terror and their ruthless executors to destabilize democracy, attack the state. The subversive plans of neo-fascist terrorism were thwarted and thwarted. In fidelity to constitutional principles”.

For the President of the Republic, the protagonists of those terrible days “were the Italian people, the political and trade union forces, the cultural and social expressions, who knew how to react through democratic participation. The sentences managed to reconstruct the circumstances and responsibilities of the attack on Brescia, highlighting its matrix and its links with the subversion of the right”. In underlining that “the country owes a debt of gratitude to the city of Brescia, hit for demonstrating its irreducible opposition to subversion”, Mattarella reiterated that “memory is the root of the future”.

For this reason, concluded the President, “today’s remembrance is a message addressed especially to the younger generations, to whom the witness of coexistence, of solidarity, of the common good is handed down to be recognized and carefully preserved, beyond any legitimate difference of opinion and interest”.
