Mario Draghi returns to intervene in the global debate

The trip to Massachusetts represented Mario Draghi’s first public outing since he left Palazzo Chigi. An opportunity to reflect on the scenario determined by the conflict in Ukraine and the global economic situation. The novelty in Draghi’s position is that he is starting to accept some invitations, especially of an academic nature, or those centered on the energy and digital transition.
He did it for MIT and will do it in Paris, without ever being too contingent and flying high. For the moment there are no think tank memberships, but there is no definitive closure either. The agenda for the coming weeks and months will in any case be balanced, with others joining invitations and events, usually non-public.
The places to go
For example, on July 11 he will give the Martin Feldstein Lecture at the National Bureau of Economic Research conference in Washington.
Draghi’s agenda will also be balanced from the point of view of the choice of places: not only the United States, but also, as happens in Paris, Europe, and in many other contexts.
Certainly the former prime minister has begun to move again and to agree to intervene in the global debate, perhaps also in view of future assignments. He rejected the candidacy for secretary of NATO, which could easily have been his, while the World Bank is excluded, because here the nomination of number one belongs to the United States. Biden has already chosen for president Ajay Bangawho took office just a few days ago, and therefore has at least five years of office ahead of him.

The IMF hypothesis
Draghi, on the other hand, could think of the International Monetary Fund, which has always been led by the Europeans, where the mandate of the Bulgarian director is Kristalina Georgieva expires next year. Here too, however, the general direction is confirmation for a second mandate, if there are no renunciations or objections.
Certainly Draghi remains a resource for Italy and the international community, and with these commitments he is demonstrating that he still wants a public role.
