The group leader of FdI in the Senate, Lucio Malan, states that “climate change is not a dogma” and “it is not true that they are phenomena never seen in recent decades” referring to the flood that hit Emilia Romagna. Words accused by the Democratic Party: “Malan denies science and offends common sense, our country, and the citizens who are suffering the tragedy in these hours”, replies the president of the senators dem Francesco Boccia.

“In every scientific field there are no definitive truths, there is always research. There are many voices on the subject of climate change, starting with that of Franco Prodi, different from the thinking spread by the media. Even in theology we are ready for research, let alone on the climate – he comments toHandle the group leader of FdI at Palazzo Madama – Then it is not true that they are phenomena never seen in recent decades: I am thinking of Polesine, of the flooding of Pisa, Florence, Venice. Dogmas may be fine in other fields, but it is always good to have a non-absolutist attitude”.

But in Malan’s crosshairs there are also the proposals of the Democratic Party on the use of the resources of the National recovery and resilience plan compared to the bad weather emergency. “I read that the left is now saying that the Plan could be used. However, I remember that when it came to writing it we did not see this great awareness of territorial defense. And even, during the electoral campaign, they told us that it was untouchable and immutable and infallible – continues the exponent of the Brothers of Italy – Evidently now they have changed their minds. In any case there are times and ways that do not seem compatible with the recourse now to the Pnrr: there is an urgency to face and it’s not the right tool.”

Boccia doesn’t fit. And after calling Malan a denier, he adds: “I understand that he does not agree with our proposals, he must defend the line of the minister Dense and of the government Melons. That you attack the government of the Emilia Romagna region to make political propaganda, along the lines of right-wing newspapers, does not surprise me. But denying the climate emergency, demonstrated by studies and data, denying science, is an offense to common sense, to our country, to the citizens who are currently suffering from the tragedy of Emilia Romagna and the Marches”. D agreement with Boccia also the leader of the Democratic Party in the Chamber, Clare Braga: “Malan’s words are a classic example of denial propaganda. We have seen the worst in Trumpian America. He selectively presents facts, eliminates critical perspectives and above all denies science. His are sad opinions. That of climate scientists instead it is a dramatic alarm, as demonstrated by the events of these hours. Science is not theology: it is study, data collection, research for evidence. And on this – concludes Braga – the consensus of specialists is based, not of those who have discovered that there have always been floods”.

In addition to the Democratic Party, the national secretary of the Italian Left also attacks Malan Nicola Fratoianniparliamentarian of the Left Green Alliance: “Until today I was convinced that the Nobel prize for the nonsense said about the tragedy in Romagna would have been awarded to the minister Salvini, between nutrients, AC Milan shirts and bizarre accusations against the so-called eco-vandals. Today I have to change my mind, after reading the denialist and climate-neutral words of the group leader of FdI senators. Once again, after the famous tweet last August about the drizzle in the mountains as proof of the non-existence of climate change – continues the Si leader – ridiculous arguments are being used to counter an incontrovertible scientific truth. That’s where the real enemies of the environment are, and it’s easy to understand why so far little or nothing has been done in this country against hydrogeological instability and for a different energy policy”.
