Luigi Di Maio’s Twitter account closed after 24 hours

The second social profile of Louis DiMaio. “Account Suspended,” it reads. The reason: violation of Twitter rules. At the moment it is not clear which of the rules the former foreign minister would have broken, so much so as to push the platform to ban the profile. The fact is that the decision came just one day after the inauguration of the new account that Di Maio had decided to create to communicate the activity linked to his new position as European Union Special Representative for the Persian Gulf. A second life, that of the former head of the Farnesina, after the farewell to the M5S – of which he was the political leader – and the flop in the general elections of 2022.
The institutional account (@EUSR_Gulf) was opened on 1 June, the day on which Di Maio officially took office as EU representative. The former pentastellato had greeted users with a tweet published in three languages: Arabic, English and Italian. “First day in office as EU Special Representative for the Gulf. Ready and fully committed to engage with EU Member States and institutions and each of our partners in the region. There is so much at stake and so much to do, through genuine dialogue and mutual respect. For our common security and prosperity.” The second tweet never came. The ban of the platform fell a few hours after the publication of the first tweet. Of course we only know that Twitter would have found one or more violations of the rules in the use of the profile.
