Lufthansa increases salaries from 9 to 17% to 19,000 flight attendants to avoid strikes

Almost 19,000 Lufthansa flight attendants will receive a salary increase at least until 31 December next year with a focus on those who are starting their careers in the German company. The move – the result of an agreement with the powerful local UFO union – will cost the carrier a few tens of millions of euros more in personnel expenses but avoids a strike that would have caused damage to passengers of a similar magnitude and in a single day of agitation.
A new contract
In the official note confirming the agreement, Lufthansa explains that cabin crew employees will receive a combination of fixed and percentage increases next year while the two parties – company and union – are working on the revision of the collective agreement which will also have to take into account the trend of inflation in Germany. The new collective agreement expires on December 31, 2023.
The terms
According to the agreement signed, the salaries of employees who are in the beginnings or in any case in the lower ranges will see their salary increase by just over 17%, while those who already receive a substantial allowance will see an increase of almost 9%. In addition to the 1,200 euros of bonus for this year – paid in five installments – Lufthansa will recognize UFO flight attendants an increase of 250 euros in the basic salary from 1 January 2023 and a 2.5% increase from 1 July.
The reactions

We are convinced that this will help to further secure valuable cabin jobs at Lufthansa, ”explained Ufo’s collective bargaining director Stefan Schwerthelm. German carrier’s Human Resources Director Michael Niggemann added that “low and medium-paying groups benefit from the above-proportionality agreement. In this way we fulfill our social responsibility and guarantee our attractiveness as an employer ».
The three chords
It is the third major agreement signed by Lufthansa with trade unions in recent weeks. In August, it agreed with the initials Verdi (which represents ground staff) 200 euros more per month, to which will be added an increase of 2.3% at the beginning of 2023 and a + 2.5% in July. In order to avoid a strike, the German company increased the basic salaries of pilots by 980 euros in mid-September.
