The Northern League “thing”. Everything is still to be understood, but one thing is certain: the League will change its “positioning” in Europe. The Northern League General Staff, meeting in Milan for the Federal Council, discussed it for almost three hours in a row. Matthew Salvini he wants it, he claims the results of the government and now he wants to “play in the Champions League” (to use the words of an important Northern League player) or, better, to be “increasingly a protagonist and decisive in Europe too” (to quote the official note).

The first obstacle is called Afd. The German far-right party is the one that, according to all the Northern League supporters, prevents the Id Eurogroup (chaired by the Northern League member Marco Zanni) from playing its match in the first division. Among the ideas there is above all that of building an entirely new Eurogroup, the “thing” in fact, capable of moving the EPP from its long-standing relationship with the Socialists. Without hiding the difficulties: to form a group you need 24 parliamentarians. More complicated thing, coming from at least 7 countries.

Bad sign, the day after arriving in government the Finns switched to the Ecr group chaired by Giorgia Meloni, who is the real competitor of Id. But in perspective, the dream remains that of a single European centre-right.
