The candidate for the party’s national secretariat manages to bring the governor and the mayor of Bari closer together, who had argued over the seat-saving rule in the Region

Of Anthony DellaRocca

“If I win the elections, I will bring local administrators with me to Rome, competent people who gather consensus in their territories”. Words that Stefano Bonaccini, candidate secretary of the Democratic Party, also addresses those who, among his loyalists, occupy important seats in the Municipalities, in the Apulian provinces and in the Region.

A national role

Music for the ears of Michele Emiliano and the mayor of Bari Antonio Decaro, who yesterday evening in Lecce were next to the governor of Emilia Romagna, who had arrived in Salento for the second Apulian stage of his tour (the first in Bari a month ago ) organized in view of the clash with his most accredited contender in the race for the most important seat of the national leadership of the Democratic Party, the deputy Elly Schlein. “Puglia is a healthy land for the Democratic Party and for the center-left: we won almost all the last elections, therefore, it seems to me that things are working out” Bonaccini underlined shortly before meeting his supporters in the halls of the Koreja Theater Buildings. “I say this as a candidate for the national secretariat and as president of another Region: every time I come here, I see so many people and I meet so many administrators, men and women of quality, volunteers, militants”.

Lecce, Bonaccini inflames the Democratic Party. Emiliano-Decaro truce

The new wind of the dem

Clear signal: the new course of the Democratic Party that Stefano Bonaccini has in mind, should it land in the national secretariat, will also involve the distant borders of the empire which so far, according to him, have been snubbed by a ruling class too perched in Roman rooms and little or not at all inclined to open up to the contributions that could arrive from the territories, in terms of fresh forces and ideas rich in propulsive and regenerative energy, capable of sweeping away the stale air that would be breathed in the party’s national control room.

Minerva among the candidates for the regional secretariat

There were many to welcome Bonaccini: well-known and lesser-known faces of the Salento dem troops who swore allegiance to the Emilia-Romagna governor. In addition to Emiliano and Decaro, among others, the outgoing regional secretary Marco Lacarra, the president of the Province Stefano Minerva, militants and municipal councilors from Salento, including Antonio Rotundo, the mayor of Lecce Carlo Salvemini met. The latter, however, took care to let it be known that his presence was not to be considered an endorsement of Bonaccini, but only a cordial gesture of welcome to the guest by the landlord.

“A party more immersed in reality”

«There is a need for a more popular Democratic Party, which returns to where people live, study, work, produce culture, suffer, have fun; we need a Pd that is more in the ideal places of society, but I have the impression – commented Bonaccini – that while the mayors and regional presidents are well aware of this, in Rome they have somewhat forgotten about it ». And again: «Also for this reason, in the managerial group that I will form, if I were to become national secretary, there will be many administrators and party leaders from the local area, because we need to bring a little more real representation to Rome. We haven’t won or lost national elections for too many years, yet we govern more than two-thirds of Italian municipalities. It means, given that the electoral base is the same, that we have a ready ruling class, but that has been kept on the bench for too long”.

«We work for Stefano»

For his part, Emiliano reassured: «We have been working for Stefano for a long time. Today the Democratic Party is in a very complicated condition. And, on the other hand, there is also the difficulty of holding the primaries at such a particular time of the year, when involving people is not easy». The watchword is, therefore, “support for Bonaccini throughout Puglia”. The president was keen to underline his commitment to obtaining the maximum possible cohesion around the candidate at the top of the Democratic Party. While, for example, the president of the regional council, Loredana Capone, has chosen to be on Elly Schlein’s side. Emiliano insists: “We are succeeding in our task, despite the tantrums and inevitable difficulties that also exist in Puglia, because in congresses someone thinks they can regulate their own personal interests”.
