Last Generation: Senate, Ministry of Culture and Municipality of Rome civil parties in the trial against the activists

In fact, the first hearing of the trial was held today in Rome which involved the three activists for throwing red paint on the facade of the Senate at the beginning of winter: after accepting the civil action of the institutions, the monocratic judge adjourned the procedure to the next October 18th.

On 2 January the activists – who with Ultima Generazione are fighting against inaction in the fight against global warming through striking actions to raise political and citizen awareness on the issue – had defaced the Senate building and shortly after were stopped by the police . Today, in solidarity with the three young people, around 1 pm in Piazzale Clodio several activists from various movements gathered including Greenpeace, Amnesty International, Extinction Rebellion, Fridays for Future and, via social media, also some political exponents of the Democratic Party – while condemning the gestures – expressed solidarity with the cause carried forward by the three young men.

One of the defendants, Laura, as soon as she left the courtroom explained that she “vindicates our actions” and continues to ask herself “if we are criminalized for this, then the lack of water, of food, the poverty to which are we more and more subject because of the climate?. Why is it violence only when we react to make ourselves heard?”.

According to Ultima Generazione, in fact, with that action the activists intended “to denounce the inability of the Italian government to face the climate emergency”. “We just want our governments to assume their responsibilities. We assume ours by going to trial and paying the consequences of our actions, but we will not stop”, the group reiterates again.

It must be remembered that the action of 2 January caused no damage to the facadecleaned up the following day and that the three defendants also risk aggravated damage five years’ imprisonment And fines of up to 15 thousand euros. The day following the blitz, the president of the Senate immediately Ignatius LaRussa had announced the constitution as a civil part of the Senate itself, which was then accepted in today’s first hearing.
