L’Aquila earthquake, Mattarella: “Commitment to complete the reconstruction”

“Significant parts of the national territory are unfortunately vulnerable to seismic events, as confirmed by the earthquakes that followed that of L’Aquila. We need a commitment to prevention, rigor in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of buildings. AND a duty that does not fall on a few but calls for collaboration between economic and social forces alongside national and local institutions”. Thus the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarellain a passage of the message sent to the mayor of L’Aquila, Pierluigi Biondion the occasion of the 14th anniversary of the earthquake of April 6, 2009, which caused 309 victims.

The memory of deceased students raises University

“The painful memory of the students who died in the earthquake must push the relaunch of the university and the commitment to school activities, for a new season of progress”, continued the President of the Republic. “In the night between 5 and 6 April 2009, one of the most devastating earthquakes in our recent history spread death and destruction in L’Aquila and nearby towns. The whole of Italy rallied around those who were plunged into pain, into fear , in need. The immediate feeling of solidarity, which belongs to our being Italian, has helped the inhabitants of Aquila and Abruzzo in the age-old effort to regain living spaces, community ties, paths towards the future. This day of memory is, for the Republic , a renewed day of commitment”.

The Head of State then spoke of the “commitment to complete the reconstruction, to support a full rebirth of the civil, social, economic and cultural life of the city”. A “profound thanks” was addressed by the mayor of L’Aquila to the President: “Words of depth and full of meaning those of the Head of State – commented the mayor Biondi – who wanted to remember the tragedy that struck our territory, the pain for the victims, the strong solidarity towards our population from all over the country. The gratitude of the inhabitants of L’Aquila towards President Mattarella is even more heartfelt for having marked this April 6 as ‘a renewed day’ of commitment, encouraging the relaunch of universities and schools, to the continuation of an effective reconstruction and to the strong collaborative push between perhaps social, economic and institutions at all levels”.
