The high prices do not spare the Easter lunch and will lead Italian families to spend a total of around 240 million euros more on the typical food products of this celebration. Overall expenditure thus rises from 1.8 billion last year to 2.04 billion euros in 2023. According to Condacons, the increases are due to tensions in the retail price lists of a multitude of foods and raw materials inevitable on Italian tables during the traditional Easter lunch.

Product-by-product price increases

Lamb meat costs an average of 8.3% more than last year. Fresh eggs increased by +22.4%. For cured meats and sausages, 9.1% more is spent. Flour, essential for the preparation of numerous desserts, costs 17.8% more than in 2022, while butter rises by +25.8%. Seed oil leaps to +31.9% (olive oil +27%), sugar costs 54.9% more. Salted pasta increased by +17.6%, vegetables by +12.3%, bread by +15.1%.

Price increases also for sweets and restaurant menus

Prices are also higher for sweets that cannot be renounced during the holidays, to the point that on average the production of Easter eggs in Italy exceeds 31,000 tons, generating a turnover of 275 million euros. The value of the Easter doves reaches 23,000 tons for a turnover of around 160 million euros. For the latter, Codacons records average increases in price lists of +31.8%, while the prices of Easter eggs rise by 15.4% compared to 2022. Even eating at restaurants will be more expensive: the 6.4 million Italians who will celebrate Easter in public places will have to face a price increase of 7.3% for the traditional Easter menu.
